I think Joyce Maynard achieved what she set out to do. She wanted to write a book that was honest. Not perfect. Not glossy. But open. And I think, from the embarrassing or painful details to the way that you know you’re not getting the whole story, she accomplishes that. And it’s really painful and infuriating and beautiful? All at the same time.

I hit a point midway through where I couldn’t put the book down until I’d finished it, and it made me grateful that I’ve never had to read and Salinger book. It made me ache for all the women in the world left open to the abuse she experienced. And grateful for the future we create that chips away at that abuse little by little.

I’m really glad I read this book.

This book was beautiful and achey and adorable and I loved every moment of it. It’s sad how much it feels like a fantasy after everything we’ve experienced in this country for the last 5 years, but it’s definitely a fantasy we should continue to fight to make a reality. The characters were fleshed out. The story felt rich and 3-dimensional. The romance grew and changed and became the most tender and beautiful thing.

I absolutely loved it.
