The Attic Child by Lola Jaye

i’m disappointed that this book wasn’t good. i would give it 2 stars but it wasn’t bad enough for it to be 2 stars but 3 is the best i can do. this book did not need to be this long. the story felt really simple and the writing was boring. i felt no connection to the characters. the book is titled ‘the attic child’ but we got the bare minimum of the story of the main characters being in said attic. also, time went by too quick which made the book seem rushed. especially at the end. instead of the characters discovering new information, they either knew (which is not realistic) or they just blatantly told the new information. this might be me being petty and/or weird but the white people were way too nice which made it unbelievable lol. how were white people just okay with this black boy in school with their kids? sir richard was extremely nice and i expected him to be worse. along with his friends. also, how the hell did celestine/dikembe know lowra was trapped in a attic just by looking at her? come on now!

the book was very informative and had plenty of twists and turns. the writing is very vivid. this book shed a lot of light on the real willowbrook state school. i didn’t even know it was a thing until i researched it. i think watching the actual news story (30min on youtube) made me more involved in the story to create the imagery needed to really understand. i just wish the ending wasn’t so phony (in my opinion) and this book could have also been a few pages shorter than it was.

this felt more like a history lesson than a novel. the facts had more thought put into them than the actual story. then the twist was extremely random & it was near the end.
