The Paleontologist by Luke Dumas

it was fine. skippable. the twist i came up with in my own mind was better than what happened. like, it’s interesting, but they never resolved the most interesting part. they were like “yeah and that just happens. no explanation, kinda weird lol”

pretty boring and i’m mad it was recommended so much, and i’m kinda mad it has a sequel
The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny and Murder by David Grann

the whole time i was reading this, i kept thinking that it was just like a nonfiction lord of the flies, except i really liked lord of the flies. also, madhouse at the end of the earth is a much better book if you wanna read a nonfiction book about men dying at sea because they wanted glory (and also human resilience and whatnot)

Quotes
“Do you want to understand people? Really understand them? Then you need to know all the best that we are capable of.”
“It took chaos to set him free, loneliness to stop him being alone.”
“Fairytales are what help us cope with funerals.”
“No one can bear to feel everything all the time.”
“If they do their jobs perfectly, no one will even notice how important they are until the day they disappear.”
“A common conception about dangerous people is that they lack emotions, that they aren’t sentimental. That’s almost never true. Often the most sentimental and sensitive are the most dangerous, because they’re not only capable of abuse, but can also justify it. Sensitive people never feel that they’re doing the wrong thing because their feelings always convince them that they’re on the right side. “Star Wars guys,” Ramona used to call them. “Show those films to 100 men with 100 different political opinions, and every damn one of them will think he’s Luke Skywalker. No bastard ever thinks they’re that Darth Vader.””
“It’s so cold being outside other people that you freeze to death all by yourself.”
“Now I’m alone in the world. I sort of memorized the silence. Because I’ve never been scared when I’m alone, only among other people.”
“We can’t fight against evil. That’s the most unbearable thing about the world we have built. Evil can’t be eradicated, can’t be locked up. The more violence we use against it, the stronger it becomes when it seeps out under doors and through keyholes. It can never disappear, because it grows inside us. Sometimes even in the best of us. We have no weapons against it. We have only been given love as a gift to cope with it.”
“Sometimes the greatest leadership is knowing the way home.”

“Anyone who feels responsibility isn’t free.”
“Anyone who feels responsibility isn’t free.”
“Exclusion is a form of exhaustion that eats its way into your skeleton.”
“You may not control everything your boys do, but you know damn well that none of them would do anything if you’d have expressly forbidden it.”
“Children are the only people who don’t have to take responsibility for anyone but themselves. The rest of us have to take responsibility for the things we cause to happen. You’re a leader. People follow you. So frankly, if you can’t take responsibility for the actions of your followers, that makes you nothing but a monster.”
“The path back to normal life is indescribably long once death has swept the feet out from under us who are left. Grief is a wild animal that drags us so far out into the darkness that we can’t imagine ever getting home again. Ever laughing again. It hurts in such a way that you can never really figure out if it actually passes, or if you just get used to it.”
