God, this book is life-changing. I recommend it to everyone in my life. It’s so beautiful and devastating. What an incredible breakdown of grief, love, and what it means to be human.

Why on earth would I give a fuck about a bunch of disgraced aristocrats during the Bolshevik revolution? Oh boohoo, did someone get addicted to hoarding wealth? Did someone get a little too comfortable with the extreme class disparity that they were on the better side of? Cry me a river dude. Every time they started whining about how they’re not allowed to be rich anymore I felt like the “Damn… I kinda don’t care” meme. And the worst part of it all is that this book is fucking boring. I love Gothic novels — this isn’t a Gothic novel problem, this is a “this book kind of sucks” problem. I’m not wasting any more time trying to get through this one.
