wishing it had explored more of the magical realism elements, the castle could have been literally anything else other than a castle and it wouldn’t matter to the story. felt like it stalled a bit at certain points but the book was still very enjoyable to read and the ending really did it for me

perfect in every sense.
captured sisterhood so well, specially between the age gap of Lucky and Avery.
heartbreaking, inspiring, maybe even hopeful? it was just a beautiful read.

dark, interesting concept, vivid.
sometimes a slowness in the plot that created this tension of what would happen next. loved the writting. how easy it is to romanticise something only to discover the dirt in it.
loved how there were 2 timelines and how the author managed to define them very well without getting confusing. you knew where you were in time without even looking at the top of the chapter

in a way I felt like this book was so peaceful in a way
i’ve not seen many westerns movies but feel like this was a true western
I was always curious on how the story would develop
there’s a simplicity in this book that I loved so much, seeing the relationship between the american and Nadia develop and how a war will create a trauma in the communities (really enjoyed how it mention the difficulties in both shias and sunnis accepting each other)

I think this book had so much potential but fell a bit short for me. I think the concept was interesting and the discussion the book brought, but both the first and last pov were just very meh, not realistic at all. After going through some interviews that the author gave about the book, I just don’t think (specially after the book club discussion) that we really understood the message that she wanted to bring with this piece

I think Mia was able to put everything that’s so good about romances into a book. I’m not the biggest fan of the genre but I was still able to appreciate this book for what it was. I also really appreciated how much focus this book had on friendship too and the importance of it.

a haunted house story that ends up being more than that, it’s a class and gender critique also. it mixes magical realism with a dark aspect to it
an easy read, i did find the writting sometimes a bit confusing as it didn’t have commas sometimes and had to reread the sentence again

i loved the references to the early-mid 2010s. this book was so funng at times and while I’m not from Viso, I could easily picture the plot unfolding
it was such a joy to read
the ending felt a bit short for me, while i understood it i also felt something was missing in some way
