A tragedy and a compelling human story. Insights to the prison system. Too real projections about how capitalism and prisons and the military industrial complex can easily join forces to charge us the pleasure of watching people kill each other. That said, was hopeful for something else in the end.

Compelling style of revisiting history. Sometimes felt slow and too many extraneous details. The audiobook version really carried me through those bits.

Wanted more from the ending. And was totally disengaged when author would reference “wrinkled mid-40s hands” and suggest 11 year old siblings run off to play on playgrounds and take turns on the slide. Nah those are going to be moody preteens on their phones. The ending felt really out of touch with anyone over the age…30?
