Was a setting of 1878 Vienna on a street I know very well, guaranteed to be a book I would love? Yes, and no. Because there’s so much else. The family dynamics and love. The fierce grandmother. The heroine balancing way too much and getting it done out of sheer stubbornness. The hero being so appalled at the atmosphere of Carnival. The way that affairs are so casual and accepted and even illegitimate children of the emperor are just reality. The consent. The hero being a virgin. And the humor. It was so funny. Constantly. And such well written characters. Love.

Such an excellent story. Couldn’t get close to figuring out the mystery for the life of me, but I enjoyed it so much all the same.
