I hated this book. I originally DNF'd it at 30% but picked it back up because a reading challenge at my library had a category I needed to fill (Has cake on the cover, ironically I don't think cake even makes an appearance in the book itself). I liked the Grandpa and I liked the cat and that's it.
It felt like the author couldn't figure out a way to get the characters out of a bad situation so added magic then hastily pasted magic back through the rest of her book. The magic element is completely undeveloped and unconnected to to the plot and even to the characters.
Also, if you choose to subject yourself to this book, save yourself some time by just skipping one of the DOZEN times townsfolk talk about the FMC and her ex. I'll sum it up: everyone in this town thinks they were perfect together (as TEENAGERS a decade ago) and expects them to get back together. It's so MEANT TO BE that the author has to remind us of this via characters saying it nearly once a chapter rather than actually developing WHY they supposedly work so well together. There's no chemistry, no banter, no shared dreams for the future, no shared interests other than hanging out in fields (I wish I was joking)
If you want a magical mystery instead of this you should read In the Company of Witches -Auralee Wallace

I loved this book. It really was made for people like me: devout millennial Mormons who lose their faith and are left floundering. It is hopeful and empoowering

One of the things I loved about this and other Emily Henry books is that she doesn't gloss over conflict to get to the happy ending.

If you've ever read the wiki page on a fantasy magic system you would like this book. If you want the lore and culture and magic of Fae but DON'T want explicit sex that seems to be in a ton of Fae works right now you may like this book.
