His thoughts were all cerulean.

I had heard this often compared to Harry Potter and I find that to be a huge disservice. Namely given the climate of all things Harry Potter lately, but more importantly, this is a different genre of fantasy I discovered I love so much more. It is the cozy hug of fantasy reading we all need, especially during the winter months. I found myself 'running' to Twitter to share little tidbits of quotes from the book. One chapter after another I felt a tremendous amount of comfort in these little outcasts learning to love and live in the hard world that is trying to rob them of their inner heroes. I can't wait to read more by T.J. Klune and I'm eagerly looking for more reads like it! If you want some backlist picks from my growing-up years, highly recommend any of Eva Ibbotson's books, specifically her fantasy middle grade. Lowkey, fantasy, cozy hugs just like 'The House in the Cerulean Sea'. This book is so much hope for queer representation **cheers**!

I don't say this often, but honestly, I find this a must-read in today's world. Especially if you are a person seeking healing, incite, and commonality. It gave me the nudge I needed to block a toxic person and to silence much of the doubt I had been harboring. Sophie's art is in the vein of graphic novels I adore and her sarcasm and humor are a delight to consume. Funny to say those things when discussing toxic behavior (manipulators and narcissists 😑🥴), but sometimes hearing words you need to hear in a way that resonates more profoundly with you, is what it takes. I'm so grateful to my sister-in-law for recommending this book and that the time frame in which I read it was so precise... perfect for the imperfect shit I am moving out of day by day.

Trigger warnings too numerous to properly list. Reading this collection was a difficult and yet urgent task. I find Roxane Gay's writing haunting, not to be taken lightly, and so absolutely necessary. I left gaps of time between each story to let the weight of her words sink in and pass. The content is heavy, but sits on your shoulders to be heard as so many of us need to be, to be heard and to know we're not alone. Be difficult, do not carry this world in a package that suits an agenda that does not feel like your story.
