Am I being an sjw liberal for dnfing a book that has a graphic sex scene between a 14yr and a 17r in the first chapter? Maybe, but I’m still gonna do it, which sucks cause I’m trying to not dnf books this year but oh my god i just cannot see why I need to read about a FOURTEEN yr getting a blowjob in detail

“Give yourselves permission to live and love on your own terms.”

Um… I can’t do this. Sorry. I like, empathize with the fact that there are definitely teens who deal with flagrant homophobia and bigotry but I
  1. am not one of them, so I can’t relate to this.
  2. really feel like the way this was portrayed was like… not gratuitous, but like, definitely a bit much

Also the writing was not great. It wasn’t bad, but especially with the dialogue, it was obviously a middle aged person writing about teenagers.
Also Nate has so many problems beloved please go to therapy.
SpoilerAnd I don’t just mean due to his assault (though that definitely didn’t help). I mean homeboy is very toxic and possessive. I go up to him stringing Luke along and was like, no, I cannot do this.
Everyone was like, you and Adam are so great together and I’m like, getting away from Nate was definitely a part of why Adam decided to move to New York. Nate is like so jealous, even before the attack and I was like, Adam please run these flags are scarlet red.

Gonna be honest, the only reason I got so far was because I wanted to see if something was gonna happen between Nate and Danial.
Spoiler Is that toxic/pathetic of me, especially given how much Nate is suuuch a toxic partner and super possessive? Maybe.
And also I was trying to cram for my reading goal but it’s literally new years so there’s no way that’s happening so I’m moving on to a book that actually sparks joy.

Tell the truth, I’m about done with hating the world. It’s hard to maintain.”

Ok I’ll definitely on me for reading a book  with a 15 yr protag and not realizing until a third of the way through this book is for the male 11-15 demographic. That makes sense, cause that’s what Colfer’s known for. So I really cannot be mad at this book for just being what it is and me not being the target audience.

That being said, this book was not bad. It was just, again, incredibly juvenile. There’s a lot of blood and gore and penis jokes,
SpoilerWHY do I have to read about dragon dick so many times.
and Hooke was a very… simple villian. Again, not that that’s a thing against the book; Hooke’s job in the story is just to be the one-dimensional bad guy and I honestly thought it was fun to have a villain that was there purely to be hated with no nuance, but there were certain lines where I was like, ok, we get it, you’re pure evil, chill. Idk I think it was just a fine line that Colfer mostly managed to handle pretty well.

Also there were lines where it was painfully obvious that Colfer is from Ireland and not the states (he calles a flashlight a torch). It’s even more apparent when he tries to use Southern colloquialisms. Like oh hen you do not go here.

I did like Squib and Vern’s friendship. That was sweet.

I wanted to get into, I did, but I kept seeing red flags everywhere: white man with dreads (eww 🤢🤮), who does not respect personal space and then the dramatic tone shift to dying loved one I’m getting out now while I still can

This was cute. Generic but it was short so it didn’t overstay it’s welcome. Good for them!

You were my good decision, Gustavo. My right one. I’ve always thought so.”

TJ Klune you’re sick. Sick and twisted in the head.

This book was so… oh my god. One second you’re laughing and the next your bawling your eyes out.
SpoilerThe scene where Gus hugs Casey and then Pastor Tommy holding Gus for the first time… no I literally cried. TJ Klune you’re paying for my therapy.

This was so sweet. I loved the exploration of grief and community. I love how ridiculous this book was, in true TJ fashion.

This was very sweet. Keeping this if nothing else, then for the feels.
