“The abilities that matter the most don’t come from Dragon’s blood. They’re gained day by day, through sweat and tears. Marked or not, every one of us has Breath enough to will our own destiny into being.”

Breath of the Dragon follows Jun as he tries to fulfill his dream of competing and winning the Guardian’s Tournament where the winner gets the honor of being the next protector of the Scroll of the Earth. More than that, Jun wishes to restore his father’s honor and right a mistake that many years ago changed the course of their family’s life. What started as a dream to make everything right turns into something bigger than Jun could ever imagine.

I see Fonda Lee, I read. It’s really that simple for me.

Breath of the Dragon mixing Martial Arts with fantasy elements was kind of a cool concept. I’m not really familiar with Martial Arts but the way the fights were written really helped me visualize everything. I said it before about the Green Bone Saga and I’ll say it again, it’s like watching anime.

I honestly thought this was just going to be about following the main character’s path to victory but there’s so much more to it than that. Jun really grew as a character and I feel like a proud big sister. With the way things ended I’m scared for him. As a reader, though, I’m excited for me.

Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

“When gods go to war, it is no small thing. The world was broken in their ruin.”

The Shadow of the Gods is an epic Norse-inspired fantasy set in the land of Vigrið after the extinction of gods. It follows three main characters on separate journeys, each fighting their own battles.

This book was very action packed and the violence was very graphic. The middle of the book felt a little slow compared to the beginning and the end, but luckily the battle scenes sort of made up for it.

Orka, Varg, and Elvar are the three main characters of the book. Orka is out to seek revenge for her family. Varg wants to find out about his sister’s death and become part of the Bloodsworn. Elvar left her life of privilege to earn battle fame. While not attached to any of the main characters, I did like Varg’s POV the most. The side characters did confuse me sometimes especially with Elvar’s and Varg’s because there were similarities.

John Gwynne did a good job with his plot twists because they left me gasping and my jaw dropping. The last few chapters really carried the book and made me want to pick up the next one because I was debating whether or not I should continue.

I really recommend this if you enjoy action packed fantasy books that are plot heavy and characters that are badass as hell.
