I was really looking forward to this book, and it was actually the first book I've ever pre-ordered. This series is just so good--excellent world building and characterization, and I just like her writing style. This one didn't disappoint. It took me awhile to adjust to the pacing--the book takes place over 30 years, and it was disorienting at first to have chapters skip a few months or years. But I really enjoyed watching the characters grow over time, and it might be my favorite of the trilogy. Excellent work, just as I expected.

This is a lovely anthology of love stories that all occur simultaneously during a blackout in New York. All of the characters are connected somehow, so the book feels cohesive even though it's an anthology which is nice. The romance genre really isn't my thing, so I didn't love it, but it was well written with interesting characters so I would still recommend it. I also enjoyed the variety of relationships, including LGBTQ+ characters, and I always enjoy a chance to read a book that centers POC stories.

This novella had all of the wonderful elements of the series, but it wasn't my favorite. I predicted the ending, which was a bit disappointing and made me wonder if I've just become too accustomed to her writing. Also, going back to a novella after reading a full length novel was a bummer. I still really enjoyed it because I just love Murderbot, but I think Network Effect spoiled me by giving me a full length story, and now I want more of those! I was also distracted because this was set before Network Effect, and I kept expecting a scene that was a flashback in Network Effect to happen, but it didn't.

Usually when I read Wells' novellas I find myself wishing for more, so this full length novel was perfect ❤️ I found myself laughing out loud at Murderbot's sarcasm and dry humor, and quickly remembered why I love this series so much. I especially love how Wells explored Murderbot's capacity for friendship
and it's complicated relationship with ART.
