my favourite of the four!!!! really talked about the difficult ethical questions regarding the climate change and human intervention. the familial relationships and the complications were also brilliantly handled. loved it. got a bit preachy at the end so knocked off .25

interesting story about siblings in their middle age after their mother has passed, and how all the secrets she’s kept affects them after she’s gone.

the main character was oblivious and helpless to the point of frustration for me, but in the end i became really sympathetic to her as we find out how she and her brother has been treated by their mother. the more i think about it the more i just wish she’d had the life she could have had if it hadn’t been taken from her. i think jeanie will stay in my mind for a long time.

knocked .25 off just because i was so frustrated the whole time lol but that was the point of the novel i guess

loved that this focused mainly on the main character exploring the world he’s found himself in, and i enjoyed the details we get describing all aspects of it. i’m really looking forward to reading the next one!

4 stars purely bc it was a behemoth and i actually finished it. i found all the details in this both unnecessary and very interesting at the same time, you really have to have an interest in the societal aspects of this time period i think in order to be able to get through it. i found cleopatra kind of naive and annoying at times, as her thoughts on her life and place in society had little to no nuance. she seemed to be unable to see how she and her relationships might look to outsiders, and was shocked time and time again as to how unimportant she was to their allies in the end, and refused to realise how fickle the loyalty of literally all of her allies was.

the book as a whole seemed to romanticise cleopatra, caesar and mark anthony to the extreme. no room for them to make errors or to be disliked by their own people (other than the romans of course), and this novel put them all on a pedestal to the point of ridiculousness. i guess it makes sense in terms of this being written by cleopatra herself, but it was frustrating nonetheless.

all in all an interesting read, i enjoyed learning about greek life in egypt and roman society, and (surprisingly) the politics of it all. worth it if you’re interested in this part of history and don’t mind an extremely detailed, minimally edited story

don’t really like sci-fi so don’t know what i was expecting lol. but interesting premise and i think if you’re into sci-fi you’ll like it. all characters were very gray, which i think added to it. very urban vibe, which isn’t something i usually enjoy but in this story it worked

I really enjoyed this at first - then we got to know just how dumb some of these characters were lol. They blamed all their misery (of adulthood anyway) on Zenia, when the choices they’ve made and the men they’ve chosen to be with is entirely their own fault. The only character I really had any sympathy for in the end was Charys. I really enjoyed hearing about all of their backstories, that was the best part imo

They make it out that Zenia “stole” their men - when really, they knew what they were walking into. Roz knew Mitch was a cheater the whole time. Tony knew West didn’t love her and was hung up on Zenia ever since college. Like what did you expect

I enjoyed the ending where we find out what Zenia was doing - it showed that all she was was an amazing liar, and she was frank with them and tried to talk some sense into them. Didn’t seem like any of them listened tho and still blamed her for everything. I wish there would have been some realisation for all of them that really the people to blame was themselves. Except for Charys I loved her even tho she was whiny!!

Anyway very 90s feminism slutty women bad they STEAL our men type vibes. But a good romp

Enjoyed this a lot more than the previous one, mainly the last third of the book. It really took me by surprise as I thought I’d had some of it figured out but I knew NOTHING apparently!!!! I loved it. I don’t like the way Chaol and Dorian let Celaena get between their years-long friendship - it should mean more to them than a girl they’ve just met like months ago. They also don’t seem to trust each other as much as you would think for two people who have known each other for that long. I also don’t understand why Chaol is still so loyal to the crown after everything the king has done, it makes me question what kind of person he really is..hopefully there will be some kind of redemption/explanation later
