If I stay by Gayle Forman Heartbreaking
By Nina Gueorguieva October 22nd 2014| Tianjin, China

Star Rating: ★★★★☆

This book was beautifully written, I can’t tell you how many times I have cried (countless). This book is not just sad, but it is also, exciting, romantic and a little hint of humor.

If I Stay is about a 17-year-old girl named Mia Hall who is trying to decide whether to live or die. This book is by Gayle Forman and was released in 2009. Forman has also written a sequel called Where She Went released in August 2011.

Mia is a very passionate and talented cello player. She got accepted into Juilliard. She has everything she ever wants. She has a family that cares a lot about her. She also has a loving boyfriend called Adam and her best friend was Kim. Then suddenly, everything was gone.

Like every other snow day, school gets cancelled. Mia’s family decides to go to visit her grandparents. On the way to her grandparent’s home, a tragic accident happens. A big and heavy truck hits their car and everything was destroyed. Mia slowly wakes up and sees the incident. Spoiler Alert: Then she sees everything; her father and her mother are both dead. Not only does she see her parents lying there, she also sees herself. “Am I dead?” She is not a ghost, but she is stuck between the state of life and death. Her body is still alive so she gets taken to the hospital, however her spirit jumps into the ambulance.

After that, her grandparents, boyfriend and best friend all comes to see her. Later on she realizes that it is up to her whether she lives or dies. She flashes back to all the good memories that she had with her family but she also thinks about Adam and Kim. Will she stay or will she leave?

I really love the relationship between Mia and Adam. Adam is punk rock while Mia is classical. The only thing that I dislike about this book is the plot. First of all, there is no plot. This whole book is only about Mia flashing back into her past and thinking whether to leave or stay.

I would recommend this book for young adults (12-16 years old). This book will also be suitable for people that have read and liked the books Looking for Alaska, The Fault In Out Stars and The Lovely Bones.

Book Length: 234 pages.
