it was such an incredible read. marie rutkoski is such a talented writer. i think my favourite part about the series is the fact that the FMC, kestrel, is actually intelligent lmao. what a treat.

this had no business being as good as it was.
this definitely should not have been a YA book, because of the heavy subject matter. and I think people are pretty divided on the book because of both the subject matter and the power imbalance(s) in the relationships. but i would also like to remind people that this series is not cemented in any real life events even though it deals with colonialism and slavery.
honestly this book is MESSY. the relationship dynamics are ULTRA MESSY!!! but that's what made this book so enjoyable to read. the plot was really well done, the world building was great, the characterization was chef's kiss 🤌🤌🤌

this book was seriously disappointing after the first one. everything that made daughter of smoke and bone endearing, no longer existed in the sequel. i will not be reading the final book. i just don't care enough about the plot or characters.
