Something about this book made me feel seen - like the author opened me up and wrote my thoughts

I am not very similar to Gilda on a surface level. In fact, I am 20 and agnostic with very supportive parents and siblings. It was the way that Gilda talked about life and death that lined up with thoughts I have had. The way Gilda didn’t want to burden others with her problems and her passive suicidal thoughts were like a smack to the face.

“I think I am an imposter. Twenty-seven years ago I was a baby. Before that I was a clump of cells. Before that I didn’t exist. How could I be a bookstore clerk, or a Catholic, or a woman, or a person at all?”

I can’t say this is a perfect book — I only just finished it and listened to it via audiobook — but I can say that it is memorable.

Paul, our main character, is a withdrawn and angry kid(only 16–17) going to college with people he cannot relate to. until… Julian comes in. Julian is so different in upbringing and personality but carries the same kind of sadness and loneliness that Paul does. Immediately they click, and immediately it’s obvious that they are terrible for each other. The development of their relationship and the directions it takes never come as a surprise but they still come together to create a haunting picture.

This is not a book with a happy beginning, middle, or end. It is not a book with heroic and happy characters. These Violent Delights is a book where the protagonist and antagonist are the same person.
The relationships and people are realistic in their shortcomings and mistakes and emotions and it is tragic.

CW: Foretold portrays OCD and death of a parent

Cassie, a 16 year old girl with OCD, can see glimpses of the future. Over the summer before her 17th birthday she is recruited and trained by a secret society of other Scryers (others that can see the future) and she attempts to use her newfound powers to change the future she has seen.

The concept worked so well. I don’t have OCD so i cannot comment on if it was accurately portrayed but at the least I felt like the feelings of anxiety and depression that Cassie also suffered were described very well.

The only things that bugged me was the feeling of time skipping. The book doesn’t really have many of these “time skips” but some of the relationships — specifically with adults — are almost glossed over or skipped to the result. We don’t see the lead up. Foretold, being Violet Lumani’s debut novel, may not be perfect, but it is enjoyable and addresses OCD in a way many YA books have not.

I am looking forward to the next book and the next chapter of Cassie’s story
