This was my first Wally Lamb novel. Given that it was up for a Lambda Literary Award this year, it wound up in my possession. After a few chapters, I began to grow very weary of the way Vivica and Annie felt like their sexuality wasn't there to add layers to already fleshed-out characters, but provide a point of moral contention. Many of the sociopolitical references were done heavy-handedly and so constantly that I felt beaten over the head by them, particularly in the instance of Andrew Oh. He's conservative-minded, Christian, homophobic--we get it.Two of the last three Orion sections in the book were chock-full of expositional phone conversations with other characters without little attention to scene. Aside from that, I really enjoyed the subtle weaving of water throughout the book, and the heartfelt conclusion.
