would’ve rated it higher if i didn’t lose some attention towards the middle of the book… but perhaps that is my own fault. the last 100-or-so pages were super intense. it was nice to see how things slowly came together at the end… and leave the story off in a place where i can’t wait to pick up book 3!

hard sci-fi that, for me, was pretty easy to follow. i thought the plot and embedded themes were fascinating. i also enjoyed the prose & even some of the characters (like Da Shi, hilarious guy to me)
the scene towards the end in the field with the locust felt incredibly emotional to me for some reason. humanity may be bugs, but bugs always escape elimination
i enjoyed it!
however, the entirety of the book was clearly a lead up to the next. no climactic events whatsoever, though personally i didn’t mind (though i can see how this was annoying to others)

not nearly as scary as people made it out to be, at least to me.  a fun and interesting short little read, but left quite a lot to be desired.
