hmm well this was sweet. didn't hit me hard. would've liked it a lot more if it delved deeper into the concept of 'what it means to be alive.' i felt like it touched on various subjects and stayed on the surface. ig that's how it was meant to be??? nevertheless, a fun little book to pick up when you wanna read something optimistic, thought-provoking but not too hard hitting.
a solid 4.5 - almost a 5 but i just felt like the ending was dragged a bit, still it left a smile on my face at the end.
chaotic, hopeful, heartwarming story about strangers stranded in a hostage situation. brilliantly written, timelines and lives cleverly woven together, every character had a distinct voice and personality, such misfits yet they come together and work so well in this book! the chemistry, the banter everything was perfect. the storytelling will keep you engaged and intrigued to keep reading chapter after chapter and before you know it you're halfway through. Backman knows how to write a compelling story! the mystery element just gives this story even more edge and quirk. i couldn't figure out the mystery & honestly i didn't even try, i was just going with the flow and enjoying the story and lives of these characters.
this book is exactly what i needed to uplift my mood and spirits in the tough times that we are in today. this book reminded me how we're all struggling and sad and lonely and broken in some way or other, but we gotta help each other, be a little empathetic, a little kind. my heart is warm and i believe we'll get through this, together. i'm hopeful & looking forward to life now,
"because we're doing the best we can, we really are. we're trying to be grown-ups and love each other and understand how the hell you're supposed to insert USB leads. we're looking for something to cling on to, something to fight for, something to look forward to.
because we made it through this day as well. there'll be another one along tomorrow."
This book was so amazing, so well done! The racism element was so well incorporated into this horror fantasy world. The characters were badass & fun to follow. It has zombies but it doesn't derive its horror from there, the racial divide, the prejudice is where the horror lies. And the way things were revealed, the decisions our mc made & the climax! ah *chef's kiss*
Special appreciation for the audiobook, cuz boy oh boy was it well narrated! I had chills down my spine at certain moments. The narrator truly elevated the mood & the experience of the book.
A good emotional, slice-of-life story. Gave me lots of fleabag vibes at the beginning but the tone of the book & the writing reminded me of Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine too. Didn't make cry or anything but i was genuinely invested is Casey's growth & i loved the journey the author took me on. It's a very realistic story about the ups & downs of this thing called life.
wow! what a smashing debut! i don't know how to put into words how this book made me feel. this hit different than the books I've read recently. this had the wierdness of a Murakami book with all those magical realism-ish elements. I didn't expect to get a clear explanation or an answer in the end & i'm ok with it. this book deals with some dark shit but the writing makes it oh so easy to get through it. usually when a book gets tough i keep it down & take a break from it, but not this one. i just wanted to keep reading it & the way it's written certainly helps.
is this a perfect book? no. it has it's flaws, the characters come off a little unclear at 1st & it takes some time to understand & get into it, & yeah some things are not very well explained by the end, but despite it's flaws it's nothing short of 5star read for me, cuz it achieved way more in 230 pages that some books are not able to achieve even in 500 pages.
wow! i loved this more than i anticipated. thought the premise was interesting but the way this book played with the concept just bumped it up a notch for me. loved the format of the book, its divided into 4 stories of different people going back in time. it wasn't like one story featured a set of chararters & the next story has a completely different set of characters. i loved that it interlinked characters while introducing new ones in every story. also, didn't expect it to be so thought provoking & emotional. it was overall a heartwarming book & a book about hope.
its short & the writing is easy to get through, the storytelling flows, transitions from past to present & from one tale to another happens very seamlessly. perfect quick read!
LOVED THIS!! only complain - why was this so short! i know its a novella and we have 5 more books in the series..but i don't think we'll have the human crew from this book in the rest of the books??? & i loved the crew! i would have loved to read more about them & see their interaction with the murderbot & with each other. also the murderbot was sweet & relatable! a sentence i never thought i'll say about a bot, much less a murderbot Such a fun little cute book! read it asap! I will probably binge read the rest of the books next month.
