Dodie Smith I KNOW I JUST KNOW  you switched shit up in the third act because you don't like books that end with "a happy wall". Dodie Smith I will NEVER forgive you for that.
She should have fallen in love with Stephen and quite literally many scenes in Act 1 and 2 imply that she has the potential of seeing him in a romantic light
but OH OH WELL I GUESS YOU JUST HAD TO MAKE THINGS UNPREDICTABLE

Quite literally the most perfect things to exist; if Daphne du Maurier has 100 fans I am one of them, if she has none then I am dead etc etc.

there's only so much you can do with this plot twist (which is overused in the thriller/horror genre really) without it feeling either plain or just overly ridiculous; this leaned in to the latter. Still, it kept me hooked and thats what a good thriller does.
