4.5 ★ absolutely incredible. Leigh Bardugo is always ten steps ahead and as someone who reads sarah j maas religiously that’s saying something. i kept trying to find the loopholes and yet was still stumped in the end. and the characters are my literal BABIES i love them so dearly and neeedddd to know what happens in book two. isabel thank you for giving me these (albeit like three years ago lmaooo) i finally got around to it and it was so worth it omg

4.5 ★ UNPOPULAR OPINION IK but i loved this book even more than the first one. i had issues with powerless’ plot and writing style even though i loved the characters. but in this book although everyone said nothing happened in it (which technically true it’s a lot of just traveling and talking) the CHARACTER GROWTH was fantastic. not the best i’ve ever read mind you, which is why it’s 4.5 not 5, but still absolutely fantastic. the plot twists revealed about kai and paedyn’s pasts were so interesting and added so much, i realllyyy loved when they talked about morals and souls and grief and being monsters bc they’re both so traumatized and tortured that being able to heal with each other is a beautiful thing. i didn’t annotate this book but i sooo wish i did there are so many beautiful lines in this, especially from kai my lover boy. did in fact shed tears at that ending. i guessed it earlier in the book but i was hoping i was wrong … turns out i was right and so que the sobbing. so glad i enjoyed this book more than the first one and the novella, it gives me hope for the rest of the series.

3.5 ★ suchhh a cheesy hallmark movie style book with lots of really funny humor but i surprisingly liked it more than i thought. the middle section defineikty slumped and i hated the scenes that gave me second hand embarrassment but the message is sweet and wholesome and merritt and cooper are my icons. end of story, argue with a wall. won’t pick up again but super sweet and happy to have finished it (literally on the last day of august) for my book club! ♡

listennnn okay i get that it was sad, i really do. aden’s and makoto’s love story was sweet and wholesome and then heartbreaking at the end. howeverrr as someone who never felt connected to adena’s character in the first book, this book seemed a little surface level to me ? and also weirdly convenient in how the story meshed with book one ?? idk how to explain it really but just overall a tear wasn’t shed. while im sad about adena, when the book’s one selling point is that it will pull at my heartstrings but it didn’t … gotta give it 3 ★.
