basically all the other 3 star or less reviews say it all - there are nuggets of truth/somewhat helpful psychology but overall it’s bs. this dude has the most obvious savior complex i have ever seen. the way he describes talking to his patients sounds like the beginning of (an extremely unhealthy & badly written) dr/patient romance novel. like no one fcking talks like this, and if your therapist is talking to you like this, saying he’ll fcking save you or whatever that is a RED FLAG.
like, if you’ve ever read a college psych textbook you can tell all these stories are either made up or taken from textbook examples & embellished.
also, he keeps saying “ppl cut for all kinds of reasons” and then every single example is SO extreme.
as someone who has self harmed let me tell you not all of us have THAT much trauma. sometimes it really is just like, a quick snap back to reality. a quick bit of pain to calm yourself down- like the way people slap someone freaking out in a movie. it just triggers something in your brain chemicals to say STOP & everything is calm & you can think again. a way to stop an anxiety attack that you know is unreasonable and will waste half your day. like for me, it was like the way ppl are prescribed Xanax or Vicodin. & to me those are WAY less healthy habits… but anywho i digress…
it doesn’t have to have some weird sexual thing or insane abuse tied to it, it often isn’t even a suicidal thing. like i know this book is old (didn’t even comment on everything that’s super dated about it, like referring to cutters in general as “she/her”) but god damn. it’s so scandalous it’s almost laughable.
& what gets me is he keeps implying that he is trying to make it “less feared” but he uses words like “grotesque” to describe their actions & wounds & keeps talking about how crazy it is for anyone to do this like ugh HOW did this get published, even back then? the editors obvi only read like the first chapter & said yeah whatever it’s fine.

this is just a rambling mess but idc he doesn’t deserve a well thought out review 😌
