Easy to read and kept me interested for most of the book, but the pacing felt off (dragged at times but then seemed to rush through important scenes). I didn't like the main character; she constantly making poor choices despite being warned by others against making the choices.
And the binding Hokzuh with the promise and then cursing him felt like a dick move tbh. It was his pearl!! Might not be what she wanted to happen but don't act like it was a huge betrayal lmao
The story world + plot was intriguing, but so many things were left unexplained, and the ending dragged on long after the story should have wrapped up, making it an unsatisfying and somewhat annoying read.

All that being said, after I read this I discovered that this book is a prequel, and I'm assuming that it all might make more sense and been more enjoyable if I had read Six Crimson Cranes first.

The two main characters had ZERO chemistry, their lives seemed completely incompatible, and Brighton in particular was childish and annoying. I was hoping they wouldn't get together.
Brighton left Charlotte at the alter but somehow it was Charlotte's fault?!? Also, going from 5 years of not seeing each other or healing at all to having civil conversations and sex within a few days?!? What on earth!?!? Both characters need THERAPY. And to not be with each other.

I struggled to finish this book because I  didn't like the storyline or main characters. However, the writing was well done, it was very fun and festive, and some of the (many) side characters were great, so I can see others enjoying this book.
