It took me a minute to get fully engaged, but once it happened I wanted to stay in Alethea’s story. It is heavy, with scenes that are graphic but not gratuitous, so it isn’t something I would recommend to everyone. Definitely check content warnings before going in.

As this is a memoir, the star rating is not about Elliot’s story, but the telling. Non-linear memoirs can certainly work, and have worked for me in the past. However, here there wasn’t always a good handle on a thematic or narrative thread to pull the pieces together, making it feel jumbled and messy at times. There also were a feeling that some areas lacked self-reflection and introspection.
