Book Review: The Last Holiday by Amy Sheppard

Rating: 4.5 Stars

My first thought when I finished this book was, “With friends like these, who the hell needs enemies?” Good lord, talk about some toxic friendships. My second thought being, “Wow, this was a really good book!” Amy Sheppard’s psychological thriller, The Last Holiday, is a rollercoaster ride of emotions that will leave you gasping at the twists.

The story begins innocently enough, as a group of old friends embark on one last holiday together. As they gather around a campfire, secrets start spilling out amidst the flowing wine. Annie, the keeper of their secrets, starts asking probing questions that worries someone. There’s something they can’t let her bring to the surface. When tragedy strikes and Annie is murdered, all eyes fall on them...

Sheppard does a fantastic job of creating a fast-paced narrative that keeps readers hooked from beginning to end. The writing is engaging and well-crafted, allowing the story to unfold seamlessly. The characters, without exception, are awful human beings. But that’s precisely the point, and it’s what makes this book so compelling. Their toxicity adds layers of tension and intrigue to the plot.

The mystery itself is well plotted, and the author expertly plants clues along the way. Just when you think you have it all figured out, Sheppard throws in unexpected twists that will leave you reeling. As someone who prides themselves on being able to anticipate plot twists, I must admit that I did not see this one coming. The author’s ability to surprise me deserves applause.

The Last Holiday is not just a typical thriller; it delves into the complex dynamics of friendship and the dark secrets we keep hidden. It explores the lengths people will go to protect their own interests and the consequences of their actions. Sheppard skillfully navigates these themes, keeping readers on edge with each turn of the page.

In conclusion, The Last Holiday is a fantastic read that combines gripping storytelling with well-developed characters. Amy Sheppard’s ability to create an atmosphere of tension and suspense is commendable. If you enjoy psychological thrillers with unexpected twists, this book is a must-read. Brace yourself for a thrilling ride that will leave you questioning your own friendships.

Nonetheless, this minor drawback does not diminish the overall quality and value of the book.

In conclusion, Special Effects Lettering and Calligraphy is a must-have for anyone passionate about lettering.  Book Review: Murder at Vanmoor Village by Peter Jay Black

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5 stars

In “Murder at Vanmoor Village,” the second book in Peter Jay Black’s captivating whodunit series, we are once again introduced to Ruth Morgan, a food consultant with a knack for amateur sleuthing. When Ruth is unexpectedly detoured to a charming village, she plans to enjoy some downtime. However, a missing artist and a mysterious death at the local bed-and-breakfast soon ignite her curiosity and suspicion. As the stakes rise and the mysteries deepen, Ruth must use her wit and sleuthing skills to unravel the truth before more lives are claimed.

Thoughts: Firstly, let’s appreciate the beautiful covers that grace the books in this series. They capture the essence of the stories and instantly draw readers in. Now, onto my review of “Murder at Vanmoor Village.” As a fan of the first book, I was happy to find that this installment was just as charming and delightful. While I gave the first book a full 5-star rating, this one falls slightly short at 4.5 stars. This is mainly because I personally enjoyed the “close room” setting of the cruise ship in the first book a tad bit more.

However, that being said, “Murder at Vanmoor Village” is still a fantastic read. Peter Jay Black’s writing is impeccable, effortlessly keeping readers engaged from start to finish. The pacing is well-executed, ensuring that suspense and intrigue are maintained throughout the story. The village setting is vividly described, immersing readers in its quaint charm.

The mystery itself is skillfully plotted, filled with clever twists and turns that will keep readers guessing until the very end. Ruth Morgan, our main character, is immensely likable and relatable, making it easy for readers to root for her. The supporting characters are also well-developed and add depth to the story.

In conclusion, I cannot sing enough praises for “Murder at Vanmoor Village” and this captivating series as a whole. It is an absolute pleasure to dive into these books, and I eagerly anticipate each new installment. If you are a fan of modern British mysteries and female detectives, this series is a must-read. Prepare yourself for an entertaining escape into a world of intriguing whodunits.

Book Review: The Global Pantry Cookbook by Scott Mowbray & Ann Taylor Pittman

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

The Global Pantry Cookbook, written by James Beard-Award winners Scott Mowbray and Ann Taylor Pittman, is a culinary treasure trove that unlocks the secrets of the global pantry. With over 120 recipes, this cookbook provides readers with the knowledge and inspiration to elevate their favorite dishes using 65 common pantry items sourced from around the world.

One of the standout features of this cookbook is its diversity of ingredients. From familiar items like miso, preserved lemons, and smoked paprika to lesser-known treasures such as Banyuls Vinegar and Makrut Lime Leaves, the authors introduce readers to a wide range of flavors and spices. This variety will undoubtedly pique the interest of adventurous home cooks eager to expand their culinary repertoire.

The book is thoughtfully organized into chapters that cover snacks, appetizers, salads, stews, and various meat categories like beef, lamb, pork, and poultry. There are also sections dedicated to fish, meat-free options, sandwiches, bread, vegetables, and desserts. With such a comprehensive collection of recipes, readers can easily find dishes to suit their preferences or dietary requirements.

In addition to the recipes themselves, The Global Pantry Cookbook provides invaluable guidance on working with these unique ingredients. The authors offer insights into essential cooking tools and techniques, ensuring that even novice cooks can confidently experiment with new flavors. A glossary of terms further enhances the reader’s understanding of global pantry items, making this cookbook not only a source of delicious recipes but also an educational resource.

While the book’s content is undeniably impressive, the visual appeal falls slightly short. Though the photographs are enticing and mouthwatering, they appear somewhat small and lack the captivating pop against the stark white background. A more visually striking presentation could have brought the recipes to life and further engaged readers.

Overall, The Global Pantry Cookbook is a valuable addition to any food lover’s collection. Its wealth of recipes and diverse range of ingredients make it an excellent resource for both experienced cooks and those looking to expand their cooking horizons. While the visual presentation could be improved, the wealth of knowledge and inspiration within these pages more than compensates for this minor flaw. This cookbook would make an ideal gift for anyone seeking to explore new flavors and techniques in their culinary adventures.

Book Review: “Mr Stoker and the Vampires of the Lyceum” by Matthew Gibson

Overall rating: ★★★☆☆

London, September 1888. Jack the Ripper roams the streets, and the Lyceum Theatre becomes a stage for something far more sinister. In “Mr Stoker and the Vampires of the Lyceum,” Matthew Gibson takes us on a journey through Gothic intrigue and vampiric happenings that will keep readers enthralled until the shocking final scene.

The story revolves around Bram Stoker, the acting manager of the Lyceum Theatre and an aspiring author. When a young actress is attacked beneath the stage, suffering peculiar bite wounds to her neck, Stoker finds himself thrust into the limelight and immersed in a world of vampires. As he becomes increasingly perplexed by the unsettling behavior of Henry Irving, the brilliant but mercurial actor, and Ellen Terry, Irving’s acclaimed leading lady, Stoker’s suspicions grow. Soon, another attack reveals a vicious Prussian baron, returned to London as a vampire seeking revenge.

One of the highlights of “Mr Stoker and the Vampires of the Lyceum” is its atmospheric setting. Gibson masterfully creates a gothic ambiance that immerses readers in the dark and mysterious world of Victorian London. From the dimly lit streets to the eerie corners of the Lyceum Theatre, every scene oozes with tension and suspense.

Gibson’s deep knowledge of Bram Stoker and his work shines through in this novel. The author’s meticulous research is evident in the rich historical details that bring 19th-century London to life. Readers who appreciate a well-crafted historical backdrop will find themselves captivated by the authenticity of the setting.

However, while Gibson’s writing skill is undeniable, “Mr Stoker and the Vampires of the Lyceum” may not be for everyone. The novel’s density of detail can be overwhelming at times, detracting from the overall storytelling experience. The abundance of information slows down the pace, making it a bit of a slog to get through.

That being said, for those who enjoy delving into the intricacies of Victorian literature and have a penchant for immersive storytelling, this book has much to offer. Gibson’s ability to weave together Gothic elements with historical events creates an intriguing narrative that will keep readers engaged until the very last word.

In conclusion, “Mr Stoker and the Vampires of the Lyceum” is a book that showcases Matthew Gibson’s talent as a writer and his deep understanding of Bram Stoker’s works. While its dense detail may hinder some readers’ enjoyment, its atmospheric setting and compelling storyline make it a worthwhile read for fans of historical fiction and Gothic literature.

The Final Party by A.A. Chaudhuri takes readers on a thrilling journey to a luxury villa in Sorrento, Italy, where six friends gather to celebrate a friend's birthday. However, what was supposed to be a perfect reunion quickly turns into a nightmare as one of them is found dead before the week is out. The setting of a luxurious villa in the hills above Sorrento provides a glamorous backdrop for the unfolding drama. The author’s vivid descriptions transport readers to the picturesque Italian town, immersing them in the opulent world of the characters.

The strength of The Final Party lies in its ability to keep readers engaged throughout. The plot is filled with twists and turns, ensuring that there is never a dull moment. The anonymous messages received by one of the characters add an extra layer of mystery, as the group becomes desperate to uncover who is behind the threats and what dark secret from their university days is being exposed.

The pacing is well-balanced, allowing for moments of tension and suspense to build, while also providing quieter moments for character development.

It’s important to note that The Final Party does have its flaws. In conclusion, The Final Party by A.A. Chaudhuri is a super entertaining read that will keep readers hooked from beginning to end. Book Review: The Murderous Type by Sue Minix

⭐⭐.5 out of 5 stars

The Murderous Type, written by Sue Minix, is the second book in the mystery series featuring Jen, a crime writer turned amateur sleuth. In this installment, Jen finds herself running a local bookstore in her hometown of Riddleton while also trying to meet the deadline for her new novel. However, things take a dark turn when the local police chief is poisoned, and Jen must once again put on her detective hat to solve the murder.

What makes The Murderous Type an interesting read is the way Minix combines the challenges of managing a bookstore with the pressures of being a crime writer. The backdrop of this murder mystery is unique and adds an extra layer of complexity to the story. As Jen races against time to find the killer, the author keeps readers on the edge of their seats with a sense of urgency and suspense that lasts until the very end.

One of the highlights of the book is its ability to keep readers guessing. With everyone in town becoming a suspect, Minix cleverly plants evidence that points towards Jen’s close friend and local police officer, Eric. This twist adds depth to the story, as Jen not only has to solve the murder but also clear Eric’s name before it’s too late.

Moreover, Minix’s writing style is engaging and captivating, allowing readers to easily immerse themselves in the story. The vivid descriptions of Riddleton and its inhabitants bring the town to life, making it feel like a place readers can truly envision. The pacing of the novel is also well-balanced, with a steady progression of clues and revelations that keeps readers hooked from beginning to end.

However, it’s worth mentioning that The Murderous Type may not appeal to every reader. In my personal opinion, I found Jen, the main character, to be quite unlikable. Her behavior towards her friends was often arrogant and dismissive, which made it difficult for me to connect with her. Additionally, her tendency to shift blame onto others rather than taking responsibility for her actions made it challenging for me to root for her throughout the story.

In conclusion, The Murderous Type by Sue Minix offers an intriguing murder mystery set in a small town, filled with interesting characters and a unique blend of bookstore management and crime writing. While some readers may find Jen’s character flaws and development intriguing, others may struggle to connect with her. Therefore, I would recommend reading a few other reviews to get a more diverse range of opinions before deciding whether this book is right for you.
