I’m biased because this series was a teenage favorite of mine. Age and experience has shown me more of its flaws, but I truly love these books. Sam and Grace have such a wonderful dynamic (after an admittedly odd beginning) and the other characters are given appropriate time and attention as the series goes on. Also, intriguing and unique take on lycanthropy.

Unfortunately I was viscerally annoyed by one of the main characters every time he entered the page. An idea that had so much potential—lycanthropes living among us and the societal implications of it—was utterly wasted on a plot that went completely off the rails in the third act, characters that overall felt flat and trope-y, and too many threads that either never got tied up or simply led to nowhere satisfying. This book doesn’t know what it wants to be, and it shows in the poor handling of the metaphor the entire plot revolves around: werewolves as stand-ins for [insert marginalized group here].

The dragons were like an anesthetizing balm applied over my brain that let me skim past the many, many, many faults in this book as I read.
