i enjoyed reading this, it's very lighthearted and soothing for me to read. like it's just very comforting to read however...i find these later books of riordan to be a little cringier. the writing and jokes and messages often just feels very forced and unnatural. i feel like this is a result of the first series having so much popularity and love and there is so much pressure to maintain the charm exactly. it's also very possible that i have just outgrown the age group this book is intended for. probably if i was in middle school the jokes would hit but they just don't anymore. irregardless, i still enjoyed reading this #percabeth4ever

i enjoyed most of it but when the four of them got together i found it increasingly difficult to read. i also did not like any of them that much and i found alice and eileen to be very similar characters; it took me most of the book to finally differentiate them. i also found felix and simon to be similar in their lack of emotional availability. actually both relationships seemed similar to me and that also makes it confusing. and yeah i just didn't like the characters very much. in normal people, the characters were unlikable of course but they had redeeming moments while in this book, the redeeming moments for felix and simon seemed to be right at the very end and i'm not sure if alice and eileen really did at all. also felix and simon's moments were the same thing where they were finally able to express their emotions for alice and eileen and it just wasn't it for me.

lucy is just such a hot mess and it's quite entertaining. i don't really root for her a bunch though because she's just such a mess and she often acts really silly, silly in ways that i can only laugh at and not support. in truth, i don't remember much about this book but i feel like i enjoyed reading about her struggles so there's that.

it was pretty good i feel like the ending lost me for a bit but then i did understand it eventually. the twist that came was not that crazy in my opinion but i think it was all well written. it definitely made me feel tense at times and the ending is well written now that i am reflecting. but the ending does make me feel like a lot of the book is just kind of random like the just talk about nothing and the ending reveals that it is nothing essentially. idk it was good but not good in a way that i needed to like take a breath when it was over.

this book was okay, there was one (1) interesting plot point that, in my opinion, would have made it a better book if that was the main conflict but it wasn't. the book is just kind of boring, it probably has more deeper meanings that i am not grasping but the plot is just really boring. the idea of the AFs is interesting but i feel like it was so mundane and the plot was mundane. like the conflict is that josie is sick and then the resolution is that the sun gets her better. like there are a lot of other things going on that are much more interesting that just aren't the main plot. ie, miss helen and her behavior and her relationship with vance, those were interesting but just not a main part of the story. or rick and josie's relationship or the mother and father like all of these things are way more interesting than klara praying to the sun to help josie. the most interesting plot point was when they met capaldi and it was revealed that josie's mom was trying to recreate josie as an AF and have klara pretend to be josie like holy moly that would have been so interesting to read. tldr: this book's main conflict was boring and the plot was not juicy at all. i feel like any other plot that i mentioned would have just been juicier to read.

the author does do a good job of making you feel uncomfortable, i'm not sure if it's always intentional but he does execute it well. there's a part where there's a lot of people arguing at the same time but not about the same things and when you read it you become a little disoriented and confused which i think was good writing on his part. when writing about capaldi and the AFs, i felt uncomfortable at times because the AFs remind me of AI that is extremely advanced which in our world would be scary i think.

anyway, kind of boring all in all but i did manage to get through it so i guess it wasn't that boring.

am i going to become marianne?

anyway i've cemented the idea in myself that no one is ever going to read these reviews really so i should just like say as much as i want about the book. this book is one that i wish i had read with a pen in hand, unfortunately it is a library book and the best i could do was a single post-it. the first 60% is like so engrossing and i legitimately could not put it down once. it kind of slows down but it also could be because i was in a different environment, my reading groove disrupted.

this book hurts and hurts bad i think. i've been reading many books (many meaning 2, including this one) where it's like a painful romance that's off and on and there's miscommunication and pining and i don't know what that has to say about me (i know exactly what it has to say) but irregardless, these two books were just so good and they just hit so different. i teared up many times throughout happy place and i teared up at the ending here. what could it all mean, who knows (i know).

i don't know that i loved marianne and connell that much, connell more for sure but marianne is a harder sell. maybe i see her as an extreme version of myself, one that could be my future. but probably not. i wish the last 40% was as good as the first 60% because the first part is already something i wish i could read for the first time again while the second part i'm just less passionate about. i don't think that the plot was bad but it just didn't captivate me and bring out visceral reactions like the first part.

all in all, i wish i could read this book for the first time again, uninterrupted and with messy margins and have it pull out the same emotions, maybe even more.
