Siken uses painting imagery in a way that makes you feel like the canvas he's decided to paint his pain on that day. Just as good, if not better, than Crush

Slow at the beginning, hard to get into but once you're in you're in. By the end of it I was just crying and reading through the tears. Emotional for sure. But so so so good.

One of the few classics I can get through and appreciate. It's funny and witty and makes you think. The main character you want to route for when he's young but desperately try not to dislike as the book goes on.

Richard Siken never fails to remind me how alone we all are and in turn how none of us have had an original experience. His writing is described as madness and I think he pulls it off on a way you may have to read over a few times, but feel like a better person for finally understanding. So so so good. 11/10 must read poetry

Evelyn Hugo is a complicated person telling her complicated story. Monique is also a complicated person trying to figure out her own complicated story. The dual first person POVs don't ever get confusing because the characters are so different that even as Monique develops it's easy to tell who is who and what is what. Easily one of the best books I've read.

One of the best YA fiction books I've read. Great story, diverse and loveable characters with solid personalities. Queer fiction done really really well.

If you watched the movie, do not expect the same kind of wit or humour. If you haven't seen the movie, do not avoid it because of the book. None of the characters develop or change and none of them are particularly likeable. Very exposition heavy in a way that leaves the reader with a lot of information at a time with no where to put it. Overall a very okay book.
