Cleopatra and Frankenstein by Coco Mellors

3.5

Two manic pixie dream girls—one an artist in her twenties and the other a rich alcoholic in his forties—meet each other and get married within six months. In the following year, they discover the issues with the inevitable power dynamics that come with a young woman becoming completely economically dependent on her older partner. But don't be mistaken: while being a victim of the circumstances, she also fails to acknowledge her own contributions to the conflicts around her and refuses to see the pain she causes others with her actions.

The author also attempts to have a diverse cast of characters around this white heterosexual couple, and brings up some of the issues of discrimination these characters encounter. However, this completely misses the mark when the all-knowing third-person narrator expresses microaggressions and, at one point, even uses a slur to describe a character!

I did listen through the whole thing, and the book was alright. It had some memorable quotes and interesting scenes to pick apart, but didn't quite meet my expectations going in.
