Excellent. Came in strong with the first story, but Amnesty toward the end put this on a favorite book list for me. All while the bits of non fiction and personal essays have her claiming to not be a strong non fiction writer, absolutely untrue.
My Favorite Thing Is Monsters Book Two by Emil Ferris

Reread book one and jumped right into this and it was… a bit of a let down.
I love revisiting this story, the style, but the pacing felt disjointed and the story jumped around in a way that didn’t quite land for me. I loved seeing Karen growing up a bit, dealing with the change in her family, trying to navigate the secrets she found out about. But as a whole, felt underwhelmed by the end. If we ever get a book three though, I will definitely be reading it.

This is not my usual thing but I really enjoyed it. Mean girls meets the craft meets heathers but you have no idea where you are at any given time. Have been enjoying breaking from my standard TBR list and trying out other things. I went into this with no expectations other than this is a pretty popular title. Most of the time when I pick up a book like that I tend to get disappointed, but with no expectations I was pleasantly surprised.
The writing was a bit jarring for me, as a style that feels like it may be trying too hard. But for the main character we follow, it just fits for some reason. I don’t like anyone in this book and yet I want to know what happens to them. That alone is a pretty amazing writing feat.
