Frenchman's Creek by Daphne du Maurier

Sadly, the most boring Daphne du Maurier book I’ve read yet :-(

This read like a straight-up romance novel. What I love about her other works is the depth and complex themes that the characters explore through romantic relationships. Although progressive in her thinking, I wish Dona had been more dimensional. I wanted more than just “sexy pirate escapism”  especially since there was so much that could’ve been said about class, motherhood and marriage.

Just gonna gross cry over this beautiful, beautiful book and it not ending the way I wanted it to. It was bittersweet, ending the only way it could to do the story justice.

Sobbing. I am inconsolable. Daphne du Maurier’s writing was a gift to this world.
