This is definitely more of a page-turner (odd phrase to use, since I listened to the audiobook) than The Handmaid’s Tale, but also feels wholly unnecessary. It seems to do less to add upon the story and the worldbuilding of the universe than the TV adaptation. One nice aspect of the audiobook: Ann Dowd reprising her role as Aunt Lydia.

“I feared I might lose my faith. If you’ve never had a faith, you will not understand what that means. You feel as if your best friend is dying, that everything that defined you is being burned away; that you’ll be left all alone.”

The happy(ish) resolution of The Handmaid's Tale. It adds more detail and confirms early suspicions that Gilead would rot from within.

I really liked this!! like some other reviews said, it focused on plot over worldbuilding, but I was fine with that! it made it a much easier read than handmaid's tale. I didn't like some parts of daisy's POV, especially daisy as a character, but aunt lydia's and agnes' were amazingg.

honestly might have given it a 5 but I agreed with some 1-2 star reviews so I felt bad. I'm also really bad at coping with open endings so I liked that this book tied things up, although other reviewers felt like it destroyed the ambiguity

I think I'll reread handmaid's tale and see if I'll bump up the rating for both of these :)

maybe I'll watch the show too, if I have time

Pros:

Despite being told that this book isn’t as strong and important as the first I feel that it is very well done and does something The Handmaid’s Tale never could. This story shows us how Gilead rose and how it eventually fell. It shows just how much difference a single person can make to changing the course of history and how perceptions of who a person is at their core are never as complete as we believe.

Cons:

I would have liked having things cleaned up a bit more with the Handmaid’s viewpoint being brought back in so we could see how the years of freedom and running had changed her.
