This book was pretty much a solid 3-star for me until the end; I just thought the ending was really well structured and put together, and that's what moved it to a 4-star. All in all, i have to say not the best story for me, a lot of tragedy, a lot of depression. I definitely prefer my fantasy, over realistic contemporary stories. But the ending got me.

2.5 stars. Very dreary, morose book. Turns around towards the end. I started liking the narrator a bit more as she came out of depression. Learned more than I wanted to know about lightning strike victims...

Book is well written and challenges your thinking on dealing with tragedy. Is is slow though and I didn't warm to the main character at all so wasn't invested.

I'm sure anyone who sees my ratings for Alice Hoffman books might think I am a little biased towards her writing, but its the truth that I really am greedy for her stories! This particular one was so very entrancing, a modern fairy-tale fable that I should not have read on the train home as I nearly embarrassed myself with crying over it. Her work often grabs at me like this, and this beautiful tale about the warnings we get from fairy stories and things we wish for is definitely worth a few days of anyone's time ^^
