Meh, it was ok. As someone whoā€™s gone through IVF and is about to lose their fertility at a young age I can relate to KateĀ
It felt like this book took me ages to read, and Iā€™ve found it a bit of a slog to get to the end, I didnā€™t want to give up because I wanted to know how it ended and what I thought would happen didnā€™t which really was a bonus because my head went to a very different placeĀ
Worth a read if you have the time, donā€™t think Iā€™d recommend it to friends as it just didnā€™t give me the ā€œpsychological thrillerā€ vibe I was expecting. Itā€™s very PGĀ

Magpie was a true page-turner for me.
Ā I worried at the beginning, as I instantly disliked one of the characters and thought it might be a DNF.
Ā But the tides turned and events shifted, and I whipped through the pages to find out what would materialize!
Ā Magpie opens with Marisa and Jake moving in together and planning to have aĀ  baby. Their lodger, Kate, may not be as she seems on the surface which causes tensions for the three.
Ā While I quite enjoyed the read, it's not one I necessarily recommend broadly. A great deal of the plot deals with infertility, fertility treatments and surrogacy, and other associated potential triggers.Ā
Ā The ending was not as strong as I had hoped for, and overall not as "thrillerish" as expected, but still kept me riveted throughout.

I picked this one up because I needed something plot-driven to keep my attention while staying at home looking after my dog while she recovered from a traumatic visit to the dentist! Magpie delivers on that front, but only if you donā€™t think about it too much.Ā

Considering how well I thought Day handles topics like motherhood and infertility, I was disappointed with her treatment of mental health issues. Not so into mental health problems being used as plot twists.Ā
