Winter at the Door: A Novel (Lizzie Snow Book 1) by Sarah Graves is a well-written suspense novel. Lizzie Snow was a Boston PD Homicide Detective. She has worked hard to get her current position; however, there is a lead on the whereabouts of her missing niece. Lizzie takes a position with the Aroostook County Sheriff’s office to track down the lead. Lizzie thought she would be out on the roads doing patrol, but the Sheriff gives her the position as the County Liaison officer for Bearkill, Maine. Sheriff Cody Chevrier has his own reasons for wanting a homicide detective on the force. Lizzie adjusts to her new life and job in a small town, two suitors, looking for her niece, and helping the Sheriff with a string of “suicides”. I really enjoyed Winter at the Door. It is an easy book to read, and I was hooked right from the beginning of the book. I do not read suspense novels that often, but I will definitely be reading this series. Happy Reading!

The cover blurb of this book looked so good, but the book failed to deliver. 100 pages from the end I lost the will to see how it ended, I hung in there, but I'm not particularly glad I did. Characters were flat and the plot line seemed scattered. Had high hopes for a great new detective series, but this is not it.

So, this captured my attention like a CSI episode, but there was a lot of ridiculousness that easily could have been fact checked. Loose lips sink ships and I find it hard to believe that everyone in the town knew about the upcoming DEA meth bust before it happened. Then, at the scene, the local cops are just tromping around when it isn't their case, the Feds are there and no one is wearing CLAN LAB gear? Oh, they did that in the woods. Meth is dirty and they would be wearing gear. Also she tried to fit in way way too many crimes that were all neatly tied up by the end. I have enjoyed CSI and enjoyed this in the same way, but really. I didn't really love the main character. If she is going to be a cop, could she at least be good at handling her weapon and not get it taken away from her so many times? Her investigation was good, but maybe she should stick behind a desk or seek out some self defense classes. Also, the friendship with Missy was lame. The lady hated her, resented her and now because the cop went along with her to rescue her baby but in the process convicted her father they are best buddies. I don't think it works that way. Also, Boston is cold. Sometimes Boston is Maine cold. The author acted like she moved from California. Meh 2.5 stars

A special thank you to Random House Publishing Group, Bantam Dell, and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

WINTER AT THE DOOR (Lizzie Snow #1), a new crime series by Sarah Graves introduces likable cop, Lizzie Snow who has left Boston for Bearkill, Maine where things are rather dark, and not so calm.

Liz has some troubles of her own with her sister’s death and her missing niece, Nicki which is a big reason for coming to Maine in all its cold and ice. As small towns go, outside visitors are not so welcome and forthcoming with information.

To further complicate matters, the handsome state cop, Dylan who once broke her heart wants another chance and her boss, Cody needs her help in solving the death of former cops. What ties the murders to ex-cops? Dylan is also investigating the murders of two girls and leads him to the area, so Lizzie has plenty of action going on.

This was my first book by Graves and enjoyed the short fast-paced crime mystery as she sets up for the next installment. I had read Winter at the Door compares to a few books I have read: This Little Piggy by Bea Davenport, Fallen by Leslie Tentler, and Presumption of Guilt by Marti Green; however, did not find a lot of similarities as each have their own unique style.

I delighted to be introduced to this newfound author and look forward to reading more from the Lizzie Snow character, as she is funny, quirky, and smart and enjoy her personality. Sounds like the author knows her way around Maine and the snow.

(I enjoy reading about it, but prefer my warm sunny beach weather here in South Florida, even though a rustic log cabin in the woods with a fire, a crime thriller, and snow sounds warm and cozy)!

The last 4 or 5 chapters of Winter at the Door were probably better than the whole rest of the book. Although a lot was happening that might not have been hinted at during the rest of the book. Or was I sleeping? This was the first/only book I've read in this series. It will probably be the last. Lizzie is a police woman who leaves Boston for Maine. Her former flame/married ex boyfriend boo Dylan made the recommendation. The possibility that her kidnapped niece could be in the area is what made her accept. Lizzie's character is OK. EXCEPT when she is acting a teenage girl over her ex Dylan. I came out with more questions than I went in with.
I'm not even curious enough to read more and see if she finds her niece. That was what kept me reading in the first place.
Hard pass. The 2 stars is for the last few action packed chapters.

I really enjoyed this book and am anticipating the next in the series already! It was a great book to listen to in the car--very engaging and put together well. I loved that it was so plot driven with strong characters. Lizzie is great and I look forward to learning more about her. I did feel the beginning was a little confusing but there doesn't seem to be a prequel or anything, I guess we are just thrown into the story. I loved the author's sense of humor and ability to interject witty remarks and anecdotes into an otherwise serious, nail-biting tale.
