Early Chapter Book, Age Level: 2nd-4th grade, published on January 29th, 2013. This book follows Amelia Bedelia on her quest to get a bike like the new popular girl at school. Unfortunately, that bike is worth way more than her parents are willing to pay, and they are making her come up with the money all on her own. Amelia has to then brainstorm to find any way to make some money for her dream bike. I think that this could be a fun book for students to read on their own time, or as a free choice book in the classroom. The specific educational content is lacking, but its purpose is to entertain the audience rather than inform. Students would be able to look to this book for light hearted fun during the school day in between their content filled readings, which I do think is important to consider.

Once again Amelia Bedelia gets into all sorts of mishaps due to her taking idioms literally.

Amelia Bedelia is hilarious. I love how she always gets confused and mixed up.

I met Herman Parish at a book fair. He's awesome.

It's funny how she "Takes most things literally" which isn't always helpful, but can make things interesting.

These chapter books are so much better than the picture books of the same name. Fun story lines. The literal Amelia Bedelia seems less forced in these chapter books. My daughter went on to read two more from the series after finishing this one.

This can't live up to the charm of the original stories by Peggy Parish, but her nephew Herman keeps the fun alive with a young Amelia Bedelia stumbling her way through the baffling world of idioms like 'step on it', 'cutting the mustard' and 'to meet halfway'. It reminds me of my Dutch Mum getting to grips with the English language in the 1980s and interpreting literally the phrase 'Time to hit the road'. I never thought of her as such, but I think Amelia Bedelia could be the poster child for Asperger's, at least in her literalism.
