A worthy successor to The Shining.

This is another book of Stephen King that I had previously DNFed because of it being so slow. I decided to give it a second chance because I had enjoyed The Shining and I really wanted to read about Danny's story. I really liked the beginning and was enjoying having Danny as the main character, but soon after, it started to drag for me and I got a little bored. I really liked the villains, though and thought they were one of the best parts of this book. The book did pick up halfway through and I couldn't put it down. I'm glad I decided to push through this book and give it a second chance. Great sequel to The Shining.

A good King book, but not a great one.

It has all the classic King strengths -- great characters, strong relationships between them, a great story, a cool setting. But it also has the classic King weakness -- an ending that makes you go, "huh?" and is ultimately unsatisfying.

Thirty something years after the Overlook Hotel burned to the ground, little Danny Torrance is all grown up, but his "shine" has never left him, the visions of ghosts and death and the most private, horrific thoughts of those around him fading only with the oblivion of alcohol. Doctor Sleep isn't nearly so terrifying as The Shining, but it is just as thrilling. It's the same universe, and Dan has been greatly influenced and shaped by the events at The Overlook, so start with The Shining (the book, as some of the differences, say, in the very existence of some characters and powers, are different between the two), and prepare of that world to be explored and manipulated.

Decent book..could have been wayyy shorter. If you are getting ready to read this, prepare yourself for numerous chapters of back and forth dialog both mentally and vocally between characters. Also some of the “plot twists” regarding the True Knot and their supposed “immortality” was just lame. If you read this you’ll know what I’m talking about.

The Shining should have been the one and only.

I have a feeling I would not have stuck with this if it hadn't been about Danny Torrance post-Overlook. The build up felt anticlimactic, and there was not really a sense of danger for the protagonists. It was entertaining, and I enjoyed seeing Danny again, but it was missing the old school King flare.

This book was an excellent combination of references to the Shining and an enrapturing new world of characters and paranormal activity. I very much enjoyed this book from start to finish.
