I have a complicated relationship with this book. I’d heard before reading that it was a bit of a love or hate kinda book, and I’ll be honest, the first 250 pages I really didn’t think I’d get along with it: the writing in first person felt a bit clunky, the action seemed off, but I kept going because the flirty banter between two characters was absolutely top notch. Something switched at the hallway mark, and I suddenly really started enjoying it. The maritime became more dynamic, the storytelling clearer, and the plot swept me away.
Overall, I don’t t think it was a flawless book, but it did entertain me. It had its issues, and I’m pretty sure it’s similar to Hunger Games (although I’ve never read it - 😲), but I will be continuing the series!

I had a fun time but the plot seemed to take from other stories a lot. Inspiration is one thing but many of the elements of this story felt copied. I still want to read the next one.

This book was amazing! The plot was interesting and the world building was easy to follow. Kai and Paedyn’s banter and relationship was perfection! I love them together so much! No spice (at least a little would have made it a 5 star since there was so much tension you could cut it with a knife) I did really enjoy this book and the twist at the end was a little predictable yet done well.

Okay. So I liked this book. But like the plot is eerily similar to so many others I’ve read that it was hard to break it away from others in my mind. I equate it to a mix of The Hunger and Red Queen. Nevertheless, I love the banter between Kai and Paedyn and look forward to seeing how their relationship develops.

This book was so much better than I expected! This is def a 4.5 star read, I just felt it reminded me a lot of other stories I’ve read and so it took me out of the world at times. However, HOLY CRAP that ending. I cannot wait until the next book, I simply need to know what happens next. The tension was incredible (though the slow burn MAY have burnt a little too slow for my liking). I definitely recommend this book!
