I often think that perhaps I am a tad too nice with some of my ratings, but this book deserves every star given. It is simply brilliant. Sets a fast pace from page one and keeps it up through to the end. Not a bad page or character in this book. Loved it, can't wait to start the next one.

I don't even know where to start with this.
Jorg (our MC) is a wayward child-murderer who processes his man-pain by killing as many people as possible. Along the way, he collects a set of charming "brothers" who enjoy raping and pillaging the countryside. Apparently, this is all justified because Jorg is at war and the world is a mean place.
As a result, we get to enjoy a ~250 page power-fantasy (allowing for dialogue) of rape, bloodshed, and violence.
Oh boy.
To his credit, Jorg is unapologetic about being a horrible human being, so I suppose he gets a star for that.
I will persist because, being a fan of the author, I have purchased the trilogy.

What a weird book. I feel like I would have enjoyed it a little more if I had understood more of what I was getting into. But overall I'm really surprised by all the prizes it's won. I recommend this: If you really enjoy the first couple of chapters, you'll probably like the rest of the book. If on the other hand like me, you're hoping that everything will have a tidy purpose if you just keep reading, you'll probably end up disappointed like me.

Coming off of the Red Sister series this was a bit of a letdown. I didn’t really jibe with the main character.

Initially was put off by the character's intro chapters, however grew to like him as the book went on. A real page turner, couldn't put it down, Mark brings us a character that is gritty & real - whilst delivering some interesting and useful life quotes at the same time.

Not a bad book, but the sheer psychopathy of the main character, Jorg, is just chilling. The whole country seems to be full of psychopaths too.
Not bad but I have no urge to finish out this series.
