I didn't hate this book this time around as much as I did the first time I read it many years ago. Maybe this time I was just more ready to ignore all the drug haze and to experience the hollowness of the whole thing. The main characters are pretty awful people who are unable to connect with anything or anyone (including themselves) authentically. The takeaway I got from this one is that basically everything is empty and all is lost.

I gave this book 2.5 stars because in the beginning, the prose was so fun, unique, and exciting. Definitely a great, famous first line. Hunter S.Thompson was great at creating tension and movement in a story from nothing. Unfortunately, there is little else to take away from this book other than mild amusement. In the end, the protagonist’s ridiculousness (not to mention his misogyny, racism, arrogance, etc.) wears thin and becomes formulaic. I read that this book ruminates on the decay of the American Dream. It definitely mentions the American Dream, but has nothing substantive to say about it.

We were somewhere around page one when the review began to take hold. The ether was starting to kick in and the words on the screen began to writhe and dance like a den of rattlesnakes. It was time to dive headfirst into the wild and bizarre world of Hunter S. Thompson's "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.".

"Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" is a wild and chaotic journey into the dark heart of the American Dream. Thompson's writing is a whirlwind of words, taking the reader on a drug-fueled trip through the mind of a madman. The characters are like something out of a fever dream, and the plot is a blur of drugs, sex, and violence. But beneath the madness, there's a deeper message about the excesses of American society. This book is a masterpiece of gonzo journalism, leaving the reader disoriented but exhilarated.

I genuinely laughed so hard at some parts of this book that I had to leave the room because I was EMBARRASSED to be laughing so much in front of my coworkers. This book has a depressing and grim undertone, but it is a rollercoaster and baby I didn’t wanna get off.
