Thank you to NetGalley for a free review copy of this!

This graphic novel was fantastic. It consists of nine short stories all about women and feminism. The stories are Julio by Julia Otero and Ada Diez, 24 Hours by Lola Garcia and Agustina Guerrero, The Bug by Diana Lopez Varela and Akira Pantsu, Empowered by Estefania Molina and Ana Orcina, Loneliness by Eva Amaral and Maria Hesse, Sexier by Leticia Dolera and Raquel Riba Rossy, Turtle Steps by Sandra Sabates and Sandra Cardona, Over a Banana Skirt by Almudena Grandes and Sara Herranz, and Mzungu by Patricia Campos and Sara Soler. I think my favoite story was Turtle Steps closely followed by The Bug. Overall, all of the stories were fantastic and the artwork for each one was nicely done. I would highly recommend that anyone check this book out.

Voices that count is the perfect title for this book. I loved reading about other women and their stories about their experiences, families, and reflections. Their voices count and matter and I’m glad I learned about more diverse and empowering women.

"Voices That Count" is a graphic novel short story collection featuring female authors writing about being women in a hyper-masculine world. The stories are powerful and relatable. The authors are from Spain, so their perspective was a bit different from some similar anthologies I've read. I'm not sure if it was because of translation or if it's a general stylistic choice, but the writing had this interesting staccato style. I recommend this book for graphic novel lovers looking for great memoirs and female voices.

A super solid collection. My favourite was "24 hours" by far.

Some of the stories felt like I was dropped into the middle and I struggled to find my way to the ending. The final story by Campos and Soler felt like white saviorism. It all felt a bit unrelated and confusing. The stories weren’t connected by anything but gender. And they weren’t very diverse at that, almost none touched on race. Queerness was mentioned but never really explored, and even disabilities didn’t figure a way into the stories. I wanted more from this supposed exploration of women.

Voices that Count offers a variety of artistic styles that address the facets of womanhood from body image to workplaces in the style of short fiction. I enjoyed all of the stories and styles, and I appreciated getting to know these artists whose work had previously been published in Spanish.

More conservative areas or librarians facing book challenges in the US should note that the book does technically contain minor nudity.

I recommend this book for the variety of artistic styles and could easily see it used in women's' studies courses or art courses. I do not see this as being one to put in the hands of secondary school students, purely because I believe many will not have the life experiences or maturity to appreciate it.

Thank you NetGalley and IDW Publishing for this ARC in exchange for my review.
