It took me a while to get into this book. It’s slow paced in the beginning, but then is very fast. It’s captivating and it all makes sense at the end.

Oh this was such a good social exploration with so many layers. I felt like I was observing the relationships of the central trio on the same way they were observing the Kiona community with equal fascination and trepidation. I frequently had to put the book down because of how uneasy it was making me feel but in the best ways. The three main characters were so nuanced and interesting and I had no idea where it was going until the end. Lily King can write!

It only loses half a star because of the ending

I found Nell's death to be completely unnecessary and overdramatic

I think the same emotional punch could had been given without it.
