Everything I had read about this book being a fantastic read turned out to be true, but as is usually the case bore no resemblance to how I had imagined it being.

The idea of writing about a warband of mercenaries using Rock & Roll band terminology works very well and certainly adds to the humour, which is liberally sprinkled throughout the tale.
There is also a lot of emotion rolled into the tale, which is often quite subtle, and thus catches you unawares.

There is also, being a story about warbands, a lot of action, which is thoughtfully done, especially the finale, which is a tense,  breathtaking battle.

There are also a lot of monsters included in this tale, which include both mythical and supernatural beings, as well as the humankind.

An all-round entertaining and riveting read.

An incredibly fun book, especially for fans of D&D! I truly enjoyed the humor and the humanity at play, as well as every fantasy reference Eames could throw at me. The idea of adventuring parties as bands with booking agents and frontmen and tours is phenomenal, and I only wish it could have been taken further.

For being a story about five (six with the villain?) men, I'm glad we got the women and queer characters we did - though more of the latter would have been great.

This is definitely a D&D-esque world and putting normal fantasy logic onto the fights made it feel pretty silly at times that our heroes come out alright while other characters die quickly by the dozens.

Additionally I think having one major plot element solved by sheer luck was a clever nod to the game, but two felt a little cheap to me.

Nonetheless I think this was a great book with remarkable characters, and I'm excited to get my hands on the sequel!

I had such a good time with this book. It was a refreshing change of pace from the more serious fantasy books I often find myself reading. I found myself highlighting lines and sending them to my friends to laugh over. It was extra fun to read this while also playing Baldur's Gate 3 as a bonus.

(There were a couple problematic moments to me that made me cringe a little, but for the most part I had a good time and I'm looking forward to seeing what can be done in the next book of the series.)
