Sabriel by Garth Nix.

Sabriel Is a good fantasy book that explores a world of magic and necromancy, Sabriel is a girl who is pushed into a place that she is not ready yet, she accepts the role so she can find her father and save the Old Kingdom, Sabriel is my first Garth Nix book

4.5 This was beautifully realized and lush fantasy with a great female hero. She willingly trekked into danger to find her father and to deal with all that entailed, when she crossed the wall. I couldn't put the book down for long before I picked it right back up to see what would happen. The hype I had gotten about the book when I was given it, is quite justified.

Sabriel is technically a children's book, but it's impact on me has been lasting. I read it in middle school and have reread it every few years ever since. Sabriel's world enchanted me from the very beginning, and Garth Nix's wonderful blend of magic and reality creates a delicious journey for the reader.

Oh God this was good. Really good. Mind-blowing! The last 100 pages were a blur and it got so damn fast. I loved the characters so much 😭😘🥰

Many of my illustrious colleagues (including BOTH of my doppelgangers) love this book with all of their many hearts. I thought it was good. There's a kick-ass young woman (somewhat reluctantly) taking on the mantle of power. There was a very well built world with two sides to the wall and two sets of cultural and techno-magical norms. I appreciated the grounding, and the detail given to the expectations of the Abhorsen. There's plenty of action and conflict. Maybe too much conflict for me-there were times that I just needed a minute to think, but Sabriel was already splashing through the next obstacle and threatening to leave me behind without even a candle. And everybody else seems to love Mogget....me? Not so much.

This book is so good. I was captivated immediately by the prologue, I wanted to learn more about this world and how it worked. The writing is very atmospheric and immersive without being overly descriptive. I connected with and rooted for Sabriel throughout the story, she's a very competent protagonist so it's believable when she succeeds, but she's also young and inexperienced so there's constant tension as she has to understand and overcome obstacles. The supporting cast is small and doesn't have a lot of focus compared to how much introspection we get from Sabriel, but they are still likable and engaging (or horrible and terrifying in the case of the villains) and leave you wanting more. I wish I had read this as a young adult, I can see how goth teen me would have adored it, but apart from the age of the protagonist it doesn't have a lot of the negative tropes associated with YA and I enjoyed it very much as an adult reader.

I have dnf'ed this book 5 time over the last 15 years, stopping right before the true adventure begins, and the touch of romance appears. I FINALLY FINISHED IT. I liked the story, I liked the characters, and I think I could have loved it, except the pacing and character depth weren't quite my style. this story was plot driven, and I connect better to stories that are character driven.
that being said, I did really enjoy this book, it was creepy and intricate, and I will probably complete original trilogy someday.
