this was not too bad at all -- a bit of escapist, entertaining fun that didn't require a lot of brain power (which is just what i need at the moment with my reading). i am glad that, before going in to this read, i knew this was the first book in a series ([book:The Slow Waltz of Turtles|33138254] and [book:Les écureuils de Central Park sont tristes le lundi|7970077] - which is not yet in english). i was a bit surprised that one of the main plot points -- joséphine agrees to write a novel under her sister iris' name -- took a long time to get to in the book (173 pages). things are left a bit loose at the end, and it definitely left me with the 'more to come' feeling. pancol does have a lot going on in this novel (possibly too much) with different characters and storylines. i am curious if they all go somewhere throughout the series, or if certain things will be left behind in book #1.

I picked this book up with doubts. My friends in France all...smiled with the look of "ugh", popular, but such a bad book.....sadly, for them, I liked it a lot. I got pulled into the story....and found myself reading 100 pages per day. Addictive like dark chocolate covered almonds.

The story? A woman...who is not so self-confident separates from her husband. She puts up with awful family members (including her daughter)...and finds her life and her footing. All while writing a book about a XXII woman. Maybe cheesy in points, but a good read....for the beach? Or when spending all your free time teaching.

Read it....if you speak French.

Sure it isn't the most complex, intellectual story you'll ever take into your hands – but it's not meant to be. It's a light narration of a story that could potentially have been dark, heart-breaking, and everything else that certain litmajor types around here seem to like. Well it isn't. Get over it. Everyone needs a fairytale from time to time, and this is it.

Overall I guess this was a waste of time... I die not like the characters and it was far too long. Yet the plot was bizarre and thats why I did not abandon it. Writing books, royal families, crocodile farms in Kenya, living in France. Good ideas but not to recommend.
