There are no names, no links to real places, and minimal allusions to a culture (there are some subtle religious references), allowing the novel to focus on morality and resonate universally. The writing itself is beautiful, the translation feels natural, and the use of this generic dsytopic world is a really creative twist on moral story telling. Carrasco successfully creates an uncomfortable, gripping atmosphere but as someone with a weak stomach for brutality, I found this a rather unpleasant read and the glimmers of hope and morality unsatisfying and unnecessary. The low rating is mostly because this is not my type of book, but I am glad to have read it - I appreciate that I struggle to appreciate this genre :)

Niets voor mij. Noch het verhaal noch de stijl konden me bekoren.

Very slow with a lot of repetitive descriptions of walking and eating. Without much progression of anything.

What an incredible book! On the face of it a right miserable story, with more death and suffering and misery than you would imagine could comfortably fit in 200 pages. Nevertheless, it is beautifully told and in a rather undefinable way much more positive than the plot would suggest. It has an exquisite attention to detail - any book that goes to the trouble of mentioning what species the plants are that they come across always wins my sympathy - and the slow pace does an amazing job of heightening the tension. The sense of place is also very well done. All in all an incredible book.
