I was engaged throughout the book, but I wanted more from the ending. I finished wishing for more; more about Emira, more change from the other characters, and more closure. I did love the relationship between Briar and Emira. I worked in a daycare and babysat for many years, so I could completely relate to their connection.

I thought the ending of this book was a bit rushed but I thought it was well written and the intention behind the book was good.

Do you ever read a book and get offended by its average rating? This is one of those. A fantastic, solid 4 star read. Maybe 4.5 stars. It is a beautiful piece of fiction that is about being lost in your 20s just as much as it is about the complicated race relations in America.

Unread shelf project 2021: book 89.

I… did not like this book.

Through no fault of the author, though — I think my dislike comes from how horrible Alix was and also, how difficult it was for me to connect to any of the other characters. Briar was written phenomenally though, she basically stole the show for any of the scenes in which she was present. I never felt like I got to know Emira but I despised Alix and tbh, I also despised Kelly. Blechhh.

But overall a very thought provoking commentary on racism, social justice, and how white people can mess shit up with oblivious, covert racism. Self awareness, a dab of narcissism, a lack of critical thinking, and the fact that racism is rampant in our society all played a part.
