A frustrating read because obviously this is the result of years of passion and research and thought, but it’s also sometimes really messy to read. The problem is that the artist never really differentiates the characters very well and his cartooning style, while suited to the messy backgrounds of the time and catching the physical movement of the players, suffers massively from having heads that basically all look the same. I had trouble getting into this, but that's likely because of my own resistance to historical accounts. Worton does well at focusing in on small stories within the larger story of the Yukon gold rush -- particularly Soapy Smith and Belinda Mulrooney, who I now need to read a *lot* more about. I also learned about Dead Horse Trail in this volume, which was incredibly depressing - if you're sensitive to abrupt violence or dead/abused horses, parts of this will be a rough read. An accurate history with some compelling moments, but not a pleasant or quick read.
