Extraordinary

The ambitious crossover between the past and present of America was masterfully illustrated by Riggs. The adventures continue in America, where the peculiar children face the difficult decision of following orders of their heart. their exhilarating experience makes an excellent read.

I was bored reading this book until the last half. The beginning felt like it took forever. Yet it is an interesting continuation of the rest of the story

Very much loved the original trilogy, but this one...

It's not bad, in fact it was very good. It was an addictive read, it was easy to relate to the characters.

But I got so frustrated with both sides. Everyone has to keep their secrets so really all it comes down to is lots of misunderstandings. And then the punishment for that only falls on the children? Who, if they don't want to be treated as such, don't treat them that way. I felt like insisting they were children didn't help them learn in anyway, it didn't help them grow.

The good guys felt gray, like they were so drowned in their own narrative of what should be happening, making them feel less like Good Guys TM and more like when is this person going to stab Jacob in the back. I felt like no one with authority was trustworthy, making it even more questionable when the certified bad guys had their 'good' reasons for bad things they were doing. It just made me dislike all of the authoritative characters in this book. Sharon was pretty okay.

And then the end is just every other YA novel I've read where the girl and boy run off into the sunset to find some unknown character because their government is corrupt? I??? What??? I felt like halfway through this book changed what it wanted to be.

Saying all that, I still enjoyed this read. I loved reading all the kids again, I loved seeing a more playful side to Enoch, I loved seeing them get used to the present time while also jumping to other periods and facing the obstacles there. I think it's about halfway through it just all takes a turn for me that I can't hop on board with. I hope the next one helps it along, but for now if I need my peculiar fix I'll just stick to the first three.

I ought to stop reading these. I thought it was just a trilogy, so when I saw #4 in the bookstore, I hadn’t thought through whether or not I wanted to keep reading. But I think the author is struggling to keep the concept going at this point. Also, I can never remember who is who. I am definitely not rereading the previous books for a refresher on this series. At least one of the previous books had a ... glossary of characters and their abilities. They all need one. Plus there were lots of typos. Like, words missing from sentences kind of typos. And the title “Map of Days”? I don’t remember it coming into play at all. Surely that’s just my failure of memory ... but it definitely wasn’t prominent enough to be a title. It was mentioned toward the very end, I think, as though I should know what it was. But I don’t remember it coming up before that.
I bought it at Barnes and Noble. It was billed as a special edition with deleted scenes, which I didn’t expect to like — that seems like a bad idea. Editors usually cut things out for a reason, right? But this turned out to be plot directions the writer had explored, but ultimately decided not to take. So it wasn’t so much deleted scenes as alternate ... not endings, but beginnings. And that I did like. In fact, one of them seemed like it might be more interesting than the plot the author did go with. Oh well.
