too much time spent on descriptions and backstories. hate the "my wife is a bitch" trope. hate the way he talks about women. hate the way black people are only discussed in relation to their race and their connection to the main character. hate how in the first 7 chapters we've met a multitude of white people but the only black people we've met were two dead black women (both of whom the main character fucked), victims of enslavement, and a violent Black guy with bipolar disorder. hate the use of accent writing. hate the fact there was a discussion around "black lovers". hate the random, useless sex scenes with horrible descriptions. hate the fact that the author felt the need to tell us the main character jacked off thinking about a black girl in high school and then cried because he thought that meant he was racist. the author is 65 and you can tell.

The first quarter of this book was super slow for me but it finally picked up around the half way mark and when it grabbed me, it didn't let go. This book kept me on the edge of my seat and it kept me guessing. Despite it's slow start, I do highly recommend this one.

So this book was better than I expected it would be. I don't think it was amazing or anything but I was pretty engaged in what was going on and basically flew through the book trying to find out.

Murder, mystery, thriller type book. It was a fun experience. Not sure I would read it again but I did enjoy it quite a bit.

I liked the story, obviously well enough to read in basically one sitting. Our main character, Abe, is a prosecutor who is attached to a serial killer case: the Cutter has been murdering white women who were in interracial relationships in Florida using a machete. But the latest murder is someone he used to know - a young brilliant Black lawyer. Is she a victim or not? He is a recent widow and a newlywed. He lies whenever cornered. His new wife is petulant and jealous. She has a temper. Does she have something to do with this last murder? Does he? And here's where I don't know if I'm being fair in my review. Am I taking points off because I don't like the characters? Are they so well written as unlikable that I am punishing the whole book? I couldn't tell you. I just I can't see myself giving it more than three stars after finishing it. Unreliable narrator and unresolved plotlines round out the story. It reads fast.聽

Other things I would take into account -- story completely fails the Bechtel test. Women and their presence/conversation are used to either further the needs of the male characters or fridged, again to further the male narrator's story. Boo.聽

Recommended for fans of Gone Girl. But, not strongly recommended.

Different plot; fascinating characters and a real life ending--not neatly tied up so all is well
